Connecting Africa

During the nineties, the African Telecom market went through a revolutionary period, mainly thanks to the World Bank's stimulation for privatisation, that facilitated the introduction of new technical solutions.

Rapidly, mobile telecommunication systems were installed increasing the tele-density from less than 1/100 pop till up today's over 100/100 pop (eg. Nigeria 119%).

However, this resulted in many countries, but not all, in a decline in interest for maintenance and expansion of fixed networks.

Although since already in 2010 most of the mobile connectivity had reached satisfactory levels, the unavailability of reliable fixed networks, lack of adequate international connectivity and spectrum management, combined with a shortage of public available and reliable electricity, contributed to an "information divide".

Access to the internet in Africa these days is still les than 50% compared to a global average of 66% and over 90% in Western Europe, North America and most Asian countries.

The recent installation of a number of submarine cables, encircling the African continent, is now providing the possibility of reliable and cheaper global connectivity.

For those reasons, today's focus is on bringing more broadband to the public, fixed and wireless. In fact, bringing reliable and affordable, up-to-date, internet access to the people.
